Alzheimer's begins?

Well, turning 60 has been no picnic.  I'm even more clumsy than before. But this evening is a doosie!

Stopped at Walgreens to pick up Rx.  Line is much longer than normal, no prob got my podcast to entertain.   Guy at register is new and S.L.O.W. then I notice his name tag says LeeRoy!  NICE.

Next stop is HEB for groceries, dog food etc. Ok, a little more dough than usual but the dogs needed some glucosamine.  Splurged on some frozen shrimp for me!  And ice cream toffee bars, such it's a secret.  So, get to the car, set my keys and phone purse down in the trunk THINKING don't forget!  Got it all in and promptly shut the trunk!   Aaarrrggh!  I'm such a dumbass!  March back into the store Hoping they can do Something!  Wait for the person in front of me at the service desk will hurry up but seems to take forever cause Frozen Stuff!  Finally I get to admit my stupidity to the NICE lady.  She tries to call the police but gets no answer, this is no time for 911.  She calls and calls.   Then she calls some guy and they go off, I hope to have a little laugh at me.  Then she eventually comes back with someone on the line,  andhands me the phone, her cell phone mind you.  I give the lady o  the line the make and model of my car, location and my name.  We head outside to wait.  I head for the car and just silly decide to try the door..  IT'S UNLOCKED!  Dumbass here must have forgotten to lock it.  I head back up to the front of the store to let the NICE lady know and apologize profusely and ask her to cancel the call.

WOW!   Get home very fast but only 9 miles over the speed limit.  Get the frozen stuff inside. Decide on chicken pot pie for supper cause I had salad for lunch.  Ok, get it in the oven, attempt to set the timer on the microwave for 60 min.  About 7 min.  later realize the microwave is running with nothing in it!  DUMBASS strikes AGAIN!  Open the door of microwave to stop it, the light inside goes out and the screen black.  Just Great, broke the microwave!  Go flip all the breakers just in case it just blew the  breaker.  No joy!  Go sit on the couch with some wine and play a game to relax.  After a bit I hear a ding, the microwave recovered itself!!!  Hurrah!  Set alarm on table to tell me when dinner is ready.  Play game some more.  Seems like a long time.  Check time, alarm didn't go off!   Pot pie has over cooked 5-10 min.  Damn!  Pull it out of the oven, try to turn it over I to the bowl and it crashes into the pan which has holes in it so juice runs out into the burner of the stove.

Maybe my biorythims are all crossing the line or bottoming out!
UPDATE!  Intellectual is just barely past bottom and Physical is crossing the line!  HA!

Bad week at 4 Dog Ranch

One week ago my old  boy Todd was out in the yard and gave a yip a  couple of times.  I didn't think much about it.  I didn't notice until the next day he was having more trouble than usual getting around.  Todd is a 75 lb part lab/heeler mix.  He was born May 1, 2003 so he is very nearly 15 yrs old.  This is almost double the expected lifespan of a dog that large.  Todd never got neutered, I know.  He wasn't mine until 2005 and by then I lived way out in the country and had no money to spare.

Todd was born to my 1st exhusbands dog Shiner.   He had a large head so he got named Big Head Todd.  His mother was a bit of a slut and could Not Be contained when she was in heat.  So she had another litter in November in that same year.  3 of those dogs still live with me.  Arwen, Angel and Tengo Leche - they were neutered.  We thought we had given Todd away but the very next day after we got 5 dogs neutered (Arwen, Angel, Tengo Leche, Kip and Sambeaux) he was returned.

We had given him to a lady with a kennel and Todd had no patience with small annoying creatures and he killed a puppy.  Understandably, she couldn't have that.  So, in the beginning of 2005 I move out to the country with Arwen and Tengo Leche (called Tango).  Just a month or so later Johann (my ex) needs me to take Angel, ok, she is a sweet girl.  Not long after that I called to come and get Kip.  Well, to be fair this was to save their lives.  Johann's neighbor had been shooting at the dogs because they were chasing his cattle.

Unfortunately, Kip didn't last long.  He was hit by a vehicle on the road.  He is buried under the Oak tree behind the house.  Not long after that Johann sent Todd to live with me.  He was pretty sure the neighbor had killed Shiner.  So, that is how we became 4 Dog Ranch.  Todd always lorded it over the other dogs, especially Tango, being the other male.  He didn't like to share food and would swallow it whole and then throw it up later.  I resorted to dog food for Large Dogs so he would HAVE to chew it and separating the bowls in different rooms.  That seemed to work fairly well.

Back to present day.  I had tried to help Todd get up and he went a little crazy.  Also, I had been on Facebook and heard about using CBD on dogs for pain.  I saw an ad for the Luling Market Days and it looked like someone there was selling it. So, I hopped in the car and drove over.  No, they didn't have CBC for dogs but they has this other herbal spray.  It was only $5 for a small bottle marked $20 so I bought it.  Then I drove to Seguin for a dog muzzle.

Todd managed to go outside to the bathroom Sunday evening.  Ha had been drinking plenty but I hadn't noticed him eating much.  When he came back in he kinda collapsed just inside the doorway and I had a heck of a time closing the door.  Steve came by Sunday and I squeezed out the door and we  visited for a bit.  I told him about Todd and that I needed to get him to the vet but didn't know how.  Steve volunteered to come over Tuesday morning and help me.

Monday was a long day.

Colorado Bend State Park, Texas Camping trip

I met my friend Ellen at my work parking lot on Friday noon.  We moved most of my stuff into her 4-runner.
She was bringing 5 loads of firewood that took up a lot of space.  I dreaded telling her I had just read last week that you should always get local firewood that way you don't introduce invasive species.
We had a lovely afternoon driving north on Hwy 183 through the hill country of Texas.  We didn't even make a wrong turn, of course GPS helped.  There are several stages of arrival at Colorado Bend SP.  You have to drive through private property and are admonished to stay in your vehicle and not stop or picnic.  We drove over a low water crossing, up some hills and down others.  Finally we are in the park grounds but it's 5 miles to headquarters on a dirt road up and down hills.  The final hill down is a long winding steep one.
We got to the Headquarters and asked about the cave tour but it was full.  We also asked about the hiking tour to Gorman Falls which was the one highlight I didn't want to miss.  It was schedule for  2 pm Saturday.  We think we can make that with no trouble.  He further informs us that just last week you could walk across the river and not get the soles of your feet wet but now it is at least 12 ft deep and flowing fairly swiftly.  I notice the kayaks for rent.
The park ranger told us we could have our pick of campsites, most were still open.  He directed us to the walk-in sites.  We are used to campgrounds where you have a small driveway to park your car and your tent pad is 10 feet away.  This time the campsites are up to 100 yards away down at 15 foot slope!  After viewing each campsite and reviewing its merits we decide on a corner one. Close to the entry.  Boy were we glad we didn't bring as much gear as usual. Hauling all our gear down will only be surpassed by hauling it back up!  The only blessing there is there should be less of it.  But the view!
We set up camp in record time.  Practice makes perfect, after all this is our third camping trip together.  Ellen likes using the matchlight charcoal to start our fires.  It is very fast and dependable.  We discover there is no cell service in the bottom of all those hills.  I however have Wi-Fi on TPWD private network.  It never occurred to me it would be the same password as at work.
Well, Ellen likes to call her hubby twice a day when we are camping.  But with no signal we hop in the car and drive up the hill.  We are distracted by several deer nonchalantly grazing just a few yards away!  We take pics, drive a little way and more deer!  More pics, continue to drive up out of the canyon while I watch the bars of signal.  After we climbed up that steep hill we finally had 2 bars of signal.  There is a convenient pull over spot that has quite the panoramic views while she explains the situation to hubby, I'm taking more pics.  After all I had been told by several people to take pics.  I often live in the moment and forget.  On our way back to camp a red fox ran across the road, he was beautiful!
Back down to camp it's time to sit and relax and enjoy our view.  Then I notice, it’s the golden hour, not really an hour but a few minutes when the sun is setting and everything takes on a golden glow. Out come the phones for more pics!  Now it's time to cook supper.  We decided to make it easy and have hot dogs.  I checked the weather channel ap on my phone and it said thunderstorms at 9:45.  We had seen and been thankful for bands of dark clouds when hauling our gear down. We weren't worried we had withstood a little storm on our Guadalupe River State park trip in June.  We had our hot tea/coco and went to bed.
I kid you not, it started raining at 9:39!  It started raining in the tent soon after.  At first we thought it was just a few drips but soon learned it was steady drips and our sleeping bags were soaked!  We grabbed our clothes and headed for the car.  We tried to sleep in the very nice front seats that lay back.  After several hours I suggested we try the back with the seats down, at least we could stretch out.  Without any padding it was quite torturous and cold.  We tried to pad and cover ourselves with our clothes but you can guess that didn't work.  Finally when I got up to use the restroom I noticed the sky was lighter in the east.  I got back in the car and told Ellen I was calling it morning and we could get up and start a fire and have our tea/coffee.  The long hard night was finally over.
As we drank a couple hot cups we watched the teenagers from A&M Corpus Christi who had invaded the camp.  They had more than 15 tents!  I finally started breakfast.  Nothing is so wonderful as bacon frying on a chilly misty morning.  I guess I'm part Hobbit!  After breakfast of bacon egg & cheese tacos we hung our sleeping bags et al out to dry and made another run up the hill to call Tim.  At that point Ellen decide she would like to fill the car with gas, driving up the hill all the time was really burning it up.  So we made our way to San Saba.  It took the better part of an hour!  We stopped at the first gas station which was FULL SERVICE!  A really nice fellow pumped the gas and chatted with us about the park.  He invited us to the San Saba Pecan Festival.  Apparently San Saba is the pecan capital of the world.  We instead went to the grocery store and bought more water.
After making a couple of sandwiches for lunch and letting it digest we looked at the time and it was ten till two!  If we wanted to make our tour we would have to bust ass and change to our hiking boots.  The meeting place for the hike was nearly to the front of the park.  We pulled in as the ranger was closing the gate.  I told Ellen to flash her lights.  Then ranger saw us let us in and told us to follow her down to the trail head.  Another ranger gave a little talk about the previous landowner and the delicate nature of travertine falls.  The rain leaches calcium out of the porous limestone and forms the falls, very much like stalactites in a cave.  After she finished and we were all milling around 3 other park rangers pulled up with some more hikers who had just finished the cave tour, man were they muddy, all but one of the rangers.  That gave us second thoughts about the cave tour, not to mention they said part of it was only 18 in high and you had to slide down.
Anyway, our hike to the Gorman falls was somewhere between hiking and climbing.  Luckily at the steepest part the park had installed hand rails.  What a sight to behold.  Even Ellen said it was worth the non-sleeping night in the car.  We took lots of pics.  Chatting with some of the rangers on the way back I confessed to being a TPWD employee also.
When we got back to camp we laid down on our mattresses that were warm and dry in the sun and nearly went to sleep.  We put everything back in the tent and zipped it up hoping to keep some of the sunny warmth knowing it would be even colder that night with the clear blue skies.  We dined on steak, sauteed mushrooms and only burned on the outside baked potatoes.  It was pretty good except the usually tender New York strip steaks were rather chewy.  So there were lots of partially chewed pieces and gristle to take home to the pups.
As we sat around the fire we decided our camping trips needed to be 4 days instead of three so we could do more things.  We would have loved to kayak and hike more but time slips away.  We also decided our next trip would be in March for Ellen's birthday.  We are planning to go to Pace Bend Park, a Travis county park on Lake Travis.  They have and entire series of Hobbit/Lord of the Rings geocaches.  I've been wanting to show her about geocaching.
We slept well that night, it was cold but we were prepared and were snug in our dry bags.  The next morning we skipped our usual hot breakfast for blueberry muffins and granola bars.  We were packed up and on the road before noon.

Dewberry season & gardening

MAY 2015

Well finally we had a wet enough Spring to have dewberries!  It has been at least 5 years since we had a good dewberry crop.

I picked a gallon of dewberries last weekend and even more are ripe this weekend. I made a cobbler from the Pioneer Woman's website.  It was good but next I made a pie from Living Beyond Measure that was FABULOUS!

Cancer Sucks but My Mom Overcame it Twice

At the tender age of 19 (in 1949) my Mom was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.  She was in college at North Texas, a music major.  Radiation treatment was just becoming known then.  They didn’t expect her to live so they gave her massive doses.  Well, she did live, grew up,  and married but she wasn’t able to have children.  She had scar tissue on her neck;  her hair and skin were very thin.  She had fair freckled skin to begin with.

Fast forward forty years, give or take.  She starts having trouble with her stomach/digestion in January.  Back and forth to the Dr., unable to figure out the problem.  Finally, on Memorial Day she went in for surgery.  The doctor found a huge mass of cancer metastasized all through her abdominal cavity.  It had closed her colon, was attached to her liver and even her diaphragm.  They gave her a colostomy and sewed her back up.  After 3 months of chemo she went back into surgery on Labor Day.  She was completely clear except for a small tumor the size of a peach pit where her remaining ovary should have been.  The colostomy was reversed and she lived over 10 years clear.

FYI - My Mom drank Jason Winters Tea during her second bout with cancer and swore by it.

Birthday Reminisce

As my birthday nears I was reminded of a past birthday that was quite eventful.  Tammy (21), Colleen (26), and I (36) went out clubbing.  We got all dressed up.  Tammy wore a cute red plaid mini-dress.  Our first destination was a ritzy club near the Galleria in Houston.  Johann, my 1st ex, was playing there.  I believe he was the one that ordered me a shot drink called a ‘blowjob’, a frothy concoction with whip on top you are supposed to drink with no hands.  I dutifully exclaimed – ‘It’s too big!’  but somehow I managed.  Our second destination was a favorite old haunt, The Hop on FM 1960.  I caught Tammy smooching the front bartender, he was giving her all sorts of exotic drinks.  Colleen was holding court, as usual, waiving her hand and saying ‘next!’

Naturally, we were hungry when they closed the joint at 2am and we headed for Taco Bell.  I was driving Colleen’s 2 door car because she had had enough.  She was in the back with her legs up.  When we pulled up to the window you would have thought the clerk had never seen 3 drunk women in a car at the Taco Bell drive-in at 2am!  Before we made it home, Tammy had to vomit.  I pulled over, she opened the door to lean out; Colleen pushing the heavy door way out so Tam was nearly on her head, while Colleen instructed her not to get any in her car!

We made it home a short time later and who is standing at the gate to the back yard but Papa with his CPAP mask still wearing only his tidy-whites which were thankfully baggy.  Tammy make us promise not to let Papa find out she was drunk.  We all attempted to be straight but that wasn’t happening, somehow Tammy tripped in her red plaid mini and landed in the dog’s water bowl.  Well, it proceeded to get worse from there.

Tammy continued to puke, this time in the upstairs bathroom, moaning at the top of her lungs interspersed with ‘I can’t believe my head is in this filthy toilet!”  She has to lowest tolerance for pain of anybody I have ever known.  Colleen just stood there laughing her head off so I sent her to bed.  I was just drunk enough to forget that once stuff starts coming up, nothing else goes down and kept giving her water!

She was sharing the king-size bed with me in.  After just a couple of hours of sleep she sits bolt upright and says ‘I think I’m gonna … (barf)’ all over me and our bed.   I pulled her out of bed, stripped her, put her in the shower then I stripped the bed and  myself and got in the shower, too.  Once clean with clean jammies we remade the bed and finally went back to blissful sleep!

Happy Birthday to me!

Mobile Home Blues

One weekend was particularly eventful and not in a good way.  Friday night was uneventful but around 6:30 am Saturday morning I heard a strange  creaking kind of noise.  Wondering what it was I jumped out of bed and ran to the back door intending to fling it open.  It has been sticking for a while and I have to kick the bottom to get it open.  So, after the aborted flinging came the kick.  The first kick didn't do the trick but the second, harder one did.  Nothing to be seen outside I attempted  to lose said door.  It wasn't happening.  Of course this isn't new either, I've  had to yank it shut several times to  get it  closed before.  Well yanking wasn't working this time.  What the heck was I supposed to do?  It's early and I'm still sleepy.  I'd really like to go back to bed but I can't with the door open.  My sleepy brain races.  Maybe I could seal it with that foamy stuff but I don't want to fill up the house for the locks.  Some how my fuddled brain comes up with duct tape to put over the holes!  Brilliant!  I find a used can of foam sealant, it won't  come out, too old I guess.   I look around and thank my lucky stars as I find an unopened can!  Shaking vigorously as instructed I attached the straw and depress the nozzle but I get no joy!  Then the nozzle breaks off!  Damn!  OK, the only thing I can think of is to seal the door with the duct tape.  I manage to seal the side and bottom from the outside but I can't reach the top, on well I'll seal that from inside.  I seal the inside top, bottom, and side.  Whew, well now too awake to sleep.  Let's have some tea and play on the tablet.

I'm up early Sunday so let's get something done.  After having war with the ants the previous week I decide to burn the trash.  Haul it outside, put the lighter to it.  Did I mention we're having a flash drought?  We had a really wet May, wettest on record for most of the state after a severe drought.  So we had lots of stuff (what we firefighters call FUEL) growing and then a really dry couple of months.  I step inside the house to do something or another and look out the window to see lots of light colored smoke,  ore than my litter trash should have made.  I exit the front door and see that I have started a lovely grass fire and it isn't even noon yet!  OK, not much wind, got my snake boots on which are almost at thick as my firefighter boots, no need to panic.  I look for the hose by the spigot and the grass has overgrown it so much I can't even see it.  No problem there is another hose stuck in the fence for the dogs' pool.  I grab it and have to yank it out from under the grass that has grown over it.  Unfortunately I yank one time too many and break the main water into the house!  That hose will no longer be of assistance.  I head for the water well and the other spigot.  The hose is still hooked up to the cow tank and not the spigot.  There is a big frog in the tank however.  OK, no water is forth coming so I will have to stamp it out!  All the time wondering at what point do I call the fire dept.? And REALLY not wanting to.  After doing the Mexican Hat dance all around the perimeter and only getting blinded by the stinging smoke a few time I finally get it out.  Well, hell.  I take a look at the water main where it broke and took a pic to take to the hardware store.

Monday at lunch I go to Home Depot on Slaughter in Austin.  The  plumber guy isn't there so I talk to some other guy cause I'm on my lunch hour and can't wait nor easily come back later.  I show the guy the pic and tell him the PVC going into the house is copper lined.  He says there is no such thing and tells me to hire a plumber!  I'm depressed and discouraged and my friend suggests we stop at Lowe's on Stassney on the way back to work.  Well, they had a plumber working at lunchtime or at least someone who knew about plumbing.  He knew what we were talking about and knew there was such a thing as copper lined PVC and even sold me the adhesive that stated right on the jar that it works on PVC and CPVC!  He also sold me an adjustable connector so I wouldn't have to worry about cutting it exact.  There was a specific  connector for the CPVC that was a sharkbite thing with teeth to grip the copper part after I remove the PVC covering.  So, that evening after work I spread a tarp down and crawl under the house to see what I can do.  Nothing is what.

Tuesday evening I crawl back under the house and try to cut through the PVC cover but my pocket knife says na da.  I'm discouraged again and decide to go the the fire department meeting any way after I begged off to work on the water pipe thinking I will feel better to be around people.  At least I was able to pick up my raffle tickets for the annual September fund raiser.
